Bringing Your Family Lines Forward to Today

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Learn skills to help you find those missing people in the last century. How to reassemble their lives; figure out where they went and where their children are today. We’ll touch on databases available on the Internet, as well as other reference sources to help you find your way.

Synopsis:
It is the goal of many of us to get from 1900, forward to today. To do this we use a variety of sources and sites. We do the entire family group so we do not to miss any clues. We find our family group in 1900. Who died first? Find their vital information. Death certificates, obituary, anything else? Where are their children listed as living in obituary? Do you get daughters married names? Move family forward from 1910, census, keep circling all of the clues and databases. Pretty soon you’ll be in 2012!

Newspaper Research
Find it in the Past, Preserve it for the Future

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Learn how to do newspaper research using both the Internet and your local library. You will be supplied an Internet link for every state; discuss availability at paid sites and what you can get from your local library. Interlibrary loan, GenealogyBank and Footnote will be covered.

Synopsis:
History of the printing press has evolved from a very labor intensive process to each of us owning our very own press. Hit print! We will discuss how the Library of Congress; the United States Newspaper Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities have all worked to save our historic newspapers. There will be examples of O.C.R.d pages from GenealogyBank and Footnote. There will be comparing census pages that have what appears to be missing information, to newspaper articles that fill in those gaps with more information. We will discuss the planning process to discover what newspapers might help fill in your gaps to your family. Then, we will discuss interlibrary loan, how it’s done, and how it might help you learn more about your family.

Jump Start Your Genealogy

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Learn how to start your genealogy, where to go to get help in your community, and what Internet sites you can use to help find sources. Genealogists use many Internet sites, discover them. Also learn how to evaluate genealogy software so you get the program that you will use!

Synopsis:
It’s time to learn where your family lines really came from. You need to know your roots! Your family health history is very important as well. Then there’s bragging rights to show your children / nieces /nephews/ grandchildren that they are connected to the past. You can make history come alive for them by showing them their personal connection to the past. Another benefit? Some of these same kids become eligible for scholarships! If your family tree has been done, and is well documented, they can get money for college! Of course, the best benefit is your family health history! Time with your family at holidays could be most rewarding in so many ways!

Doing On-site Research
Going There, Walking Their Ground...

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
No matter where you want to research, you need to plan your trip. Learn what planning needs to be done to be successful at onsite research. Covers the necessary preparation before going, what items to take with you, and what to do when you get there!

Synopsis:
Have you dreamed of going “there” and doing some on site research? Many of us have had that dream, and then worked to make it come true! You can as well. There are several things you can do while still at home to make this a positive experience. Preparation is everything! After all, we all have limited resources of time and money! Going on site to do research is one of the most exciting things I get to do! The LDS church has not filmed everything. So, expect to find some wonderful treasures doing on site research.

Planning a Successful Reunion

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Anyone can put together a reunion. We will discuss family reunions, class reunions and military reunions. There are software programs and Internet sites to help with this task. We will discuss how to start this project and tracking it with time lines. Budgets and your team that will help you get your family together! Survey examples to help guide you are included.

Synopsis:
Every reunion starts with a survey of interest, and then we start building the reunion of our dreams! Back yard or resort get-a-way? Pot luck or catered event? Hotel, ocean cruise, or camping and river rafting? There are as many ideas of what a successful reunion looks like as there are people. Come learn about opportunities to add to your next reunion, and share some ideas as well.

Lecture will cover online cemetery databases and how the individual can add valuable information to the databases. We will cover many online cemeteries to help you discover those wonderful nuggets that extend your family tree.

Online cemeteries are growing every day. We will discuss sites such as Find-A-Grave, Rootsweb, USGenWeb, and more. Each cemetery database has its strengths; we’ll discuss how best to use each one as effectively as possible.

RootsMagic

We will do an in depth introduction of RootsMagic. We’ll cover items such as how to input information; reports; checking your database for accuracy with a system check; color coding; relationship calculator; citations and more.

Synopsis:
RootsMagic is an easy to use database to help you with your genealogy. It is also the only program that helps you to enter citations as they are listed in one of the Evidence Explained models; be that a Quicksheet or one of the Evidence books.

Communication in the 21st Century
Facebook, twitter & Google+

We will walk through the ins and outs of facebook, twitter and Google+; we’ll discuss your privacy settings as well as making friends online and how to interact with them. Then there’s that whole “app” thing. There’s an app for everything, but do you really want it?

Synopsis:
Communication in the 21st century can leave us feeling confused and worried about our privacy and how to participate in communicating with people without looking over your shoulder.

Blogging: Otherwise Known as Cousin Bait!

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Let’s talk about setting up a blogging account. This will be interactive so bring your laptop; a name for your blog; a photo (on your laptop) and have the story of the photo created in Word or other word type program. Photograph a personal family item and tell of its provenance. Then we’ll discuss telling the world about your new blog!

Synopsis:
Blogging is a wonderful way to tell your own family about its history as well as put information out on the cloud as cousin bait.

Use a blog to tell your family the provenance of items in your home; your family stories; your research trips and more.
